Your step-by-step guide to build a terrarium:

Materials You’ll Need: Glass jar, pebbles or gravel, potting soil, Plants (succulents, moss, ferns, air plants), Decorative elements (rocks, wood), Spray bottle or small watering can and a handy cutting mat.

1. Choose Your Container

Pick a clear container with an open or closed top, depending on the plants:

• Open terrariums: Best for succulents and cacti (dry environment). Our Scandi Jars are perfect for this.

• Closed terrariums: Ideal for ferns, moss, and tropical plants (humid environment). Wire or Cork jars work very well.

Dry Environment – Best for Succulents & Cacti

Best for: Bright, airy spaces with minimal watering.

    Plant Suggestions

    • Succulents (e.g., Echeveria, Haworthia, Jade Plant) – Thrive in dry conditions.
    • Cacti – Need very little water and lots of light.
    • Air Plants (Tillandsia) – Can sit on top of soil or decorative elements.
    • Sedum – Low-growing and hardy.
    • Aloe Vera – Adds texture and is easy to maintain.

    Care

    • Needs bright, indirect light or direct sunlight.
    • Water sparingly (every 2-3 weeks).
    • Use sandy, well-draining soil (cactus mix is great).
  • Closed Terrarium

Humid Environment – Best for Tropical Plants & Moss

Best for: East care, moisture-loving plants in low to medium light.

    Plant Suggestions

    • Ferns (e.g., Maidenhair Fern, Button Fern) – Love humidity.
    • Moss (Sheet Moss, Cushion Moss) – Thrives in damp environments.
    • Fittonia (Nerve Plant) – Adds color with its vibrant leaf veins.
    • Pilea (Aluminum Plant, Baby Tears) – Small, easy to grow, and lush.
    • Peperomia – Low-maintenance and does well in humid conditions.
    • Spider Plant (small ones) – Can tolerate humidity and indirect light.

    Care

    • Keep the lid closed to maintain moisture.
    • Avoid direct sunlight (can cause overheating).
    • Water sparingly—usually once a month or when the soil feels dry.

Clipping and care

Use some long scissors to clip your plants and you can also shape with wire too!
