Red or white? Find the perfect wine glasses to accompany your wine
Ah wine, vino, wein. One of the oldest drinks on the planet, invented around the same time as beer and mead, wine has been around for around 7,000 years! And since the discovery of glass, wine glasses have existed. Before glass wine was enjoyed from earthen receptacles, materials such as clay or wood, with the discovery of metalworking bringing around metal options and traditional pottery. Red or white, whatever your preference, wine tastes better when enjoyed from the right glass. The difference between red and white wine glasses comes in their shape or size.
You can break down the glass type by its function: wide bowls increase exposure to air, maximising on the development of scent, perfect for red wines. Narrower bowls by comparison are for more subtly flavoured wines. The length of the stem will also dictate which type of wine should be held in it – red wine glasses are usually served at room temperature and will not change flavour simply from the heat of the hand. These glasses typically have slightly shorter stems, coupled with the wide bowl this usually gives them a robust, stout appearance. On the opposite end of the spectrum, white wine is almost always served chilled and should be as near to that temperature to be enjoyed fully, hence the longer stem!
